Joint Astronomy Centre Outreach

Signing of the Memorandum of Understanding between JAC/STFC and CEOU
On 9 December 2008, a memorandum of understanding (MOU) was signed, whereby the Centre
for the Exploration of the Origin of the Universe (CEOU), a research centre of the Seoul
National University, South Korea, will obtain telescope time on the United Kingdom Infrared
Telescope (UKIRT). The MOU will come into effect on 1 February 2009 and will be for an
initial period of three years.
The MOU was signed at the Joint Astronomy Centre in Hilo, Hawai`i by Professor Gary
Davis, Director JAC, on behalf of the Science and Technology Facilities Council (STFC),
and Professor Myungshin Im, Director CEOU.
This agreement will allow CEOU to obtain telescope time on UKIRT. In addition, CEOU
will join the UK Infrared Deep Sky Survey (UKIDSS) programme. CEOU's financial contribution
will be approximately $750,000 over the three year period and a proportion of their
observing time will be allocated to the UKIDSS programme.
