Star formation region ON2

The image above, taken at the United Kingdom Infrared Telescope on Mauna Kea, reveals the striking star formation region ON2 in glorious technicolor! The golden-colored cloud of gas and dust harbors numerous young, red stars. These were all formed inside the nebula, as gas and dust collapsed under its own weight to form dense, cold cores and, after the onset of nuclear burning, young stars. This nebula is affectionately known as "the Chicken Nebula" - can you see why?
